Passions We Desire

William Studebaker

Read "Signals" and "Peach"

Journeys of the mind, body, and spirit through a world of constant flux and change, Passions We Desire is a collection of superbly crafted poems celebrating the redemptive power of passion and love, whether dancing on a river or in the back seat of a car.

studeBefore his untimely death on July 4, 2008, poet, essayist, and kayaker William Studebaker published his work widely in books, literary magazines, and anthologies. He taught literature and writing at the College of Southern Idaho and Idaho State University for a quarter century before devoting himself exclusively to his writing and kayaking. A columnist and feature writer for the Twin FallsTimes-News for a number of years, Bill was for many Idaho’s true poet laureate. His poems reflect a love of the landscape of Idaho and the Intermountain West and the anthropological heritage of the region.

In addition to Passions We Desire, his books include Trailing the Raven, The Rat Lady at the Company Dump, River Religion (all from Limberlost Press), Everything Goes without Saying and The Cleaving (both from Confluence Press),  Falling from the Sky (Redneck Press), Travelers in an Antique Land (poems and photographs, University of Idaho/Caxton Press), Short of a Good Promise (a memoir, Washington State University Press), and other books. Limberlost is preparing to publish a book-length collection of his selected poems by the fall of 2010.

Bill_dogHe was profiled a number of times on Idaho Public Television’s Outdoor Idaho, excerpts of which appear on http://www.youtube.com/.

In 2006, he received the Idaho Humanities Council's award for “Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities.”

With his wife Judy, he raised two sons, Rob and Eric, and two daughters, Tona and Tyler, near Twin Falls.

Poet, teacher, house builder, bird hunter, dog trainer, extreme kayaker, father, husband, grandfather, and friend to many, Bill was a force of nature whose legacy is his poetry and his great family.
